■ 若山牧水(Bokusui Wakayama)　　

(1885-1928)
1885年（明治１８年）、宮崎県に生まれ、人間や自然への溢れる想いを歌い、
日本の短歌史に偉大な足跡を残した国民的歌人です。
文学を志し早稲田大学在学中から作歌、執筆活動に専念し、平易純情な浪漫的作風で旅と酒の歌を数多く残しております。
1920年に一家をあげて沼津へ移住し、その後1928年（昭和３年）、43歳の若さで 亡くなるまで の間を沼津で過ごしました。
雑誌『詩歌時代』などを中心に精力的に出版活動を展開する傍ら、
天城の山桜の美しさに 魅せられた牧水は幾たびも天城の里を訪れ、23首もの歌を残しています。

山桜２３首のうち５首を刻んだ歌碑が、湯ヶ島西平神社へ向かう高台に建てられています。

□若山牧水の山桜
若山牧水の「山桜の歌」に詠われた桜の木でございます。
枝を大きく広げて現在も毎年春にはゆ煙の暖かさの為か、他の桜に先がけて美しい花を 咲かせます。

■ Bokusui Wakayama(若山牧水)　　

(1885-1928)
He was born in Miyazaki-pref in 1885. He composed many poems with bushel of love for nature and people and made a lot of literary attainments. He intended to be a literary writer since he was a student in Waseda university and he composed many poems about traveling and sake with pure-hearted style in the romantic vein. His family moved to Numazu in Shizuoka-pref in 1920 and lived there until his end in 1928, at the tender age of 43.
While working actively on publication including a magazine 'Shika-Zidai(poetry age)' , he visited Amagi many times to appreciate the beauty of the mountain cherry and composed 23 poems there.

□ A mountain cherry of Bokusui Wakayama
It is the mountain cherry in a poem of mountain cherry. It has the beautiful precocious cherry blossoms by hot steam from the bath every year.
