■ 島崎藤村(Touson Shimazaki)　　

(1872-1943)
明治５年、長野県に生まれました。本名は島崎春樹。
生家は江戸時代、本陣・庄屋・問屋をかねた旧家でした。
９歳で学問のため上京し、同郷の吉村家に寄宿しながら日本橋の泰明小学校に通い、
明治学院普通科を卒業しました。明治女学校、東北学院、小諸義塾の英語、国語教師として教鞭をとるかたわら、
「文学界」で北村透谷らとともに浪漫派詩人として活躍し、明治３０年には詩集『若菜集』を刊行しました。
『春』『家』などの自伝的作品を発表した自然主義を代表する作家です。大正２年フランスへ渡り 第一次世界大戦に遭遇。
帰国後、昭和4年、長編『夜明け前』を発表。歴史小説として 高い評価を受けました。
昭和１８年『東方の門』執筆中に脳溢血で倒れ71年の生涯を終えました。

□島崎藤村文学碑
洋画家、根岸氏によってデザインされた中央に馬車を真後ろから見た形をした碑です。
明治42年、文学仲間の田山花袋、浦原有明、武林無想庵の４人で伊豆を旅した際、
当時乗合馬車に揺られ落合楼で一泊し、 天城路を下田へ向かった時の思い出の一文。
「茅野と言う山村の入口で吾輩は三人ばかりの荒れくれた女に会った。」と刻まれています。

■ Touson Shimazaki(島崎藤村)

In 1872, Haruki Shimazaki(His real name) was born in Nagano-pref.
His birth place was an old-established family running an Inn, wholesale business as a malik in the Edo period (The 19th C.). He moved to Tokyo at the age of 9 and went to Jinmei elementary school in Nihonbashi from boarding house and graduated Meiji University. After graduating, he became an enthusiastic teacher of English and Japanese at Meiji Women's school, Touhoku Gakuin, a cram school. While he participate actively in ' Bungaku-kai(A magazine of literature)' with Toukoku Kitamura as a romantic poet and composed ' Wakana-syu (A collection of poems)' in 1897. He is a representative author presented autobiographical works such as 'Haru(Spring)' 'Ie (House)'. He moved to France in 1913 and run into the WW・. In 1929 after returning to Japan he published a novel ' Yoake-mae(Before dawn)' and it received highly recognition as a historical novel. His end was in 1943 at the 71 of age during writing for 'Touhou no Mon(Eastern gate)' by a stroke.

□ Monument of Touson Shimazaki
It is a monument designed by a oil painter Mr.Negishi and it has the shape of a horse carriage seen from the back in the middle. When he visited Izu with 3 Japanese historical authors in 1967, he stayed at Ochiairou overnight and went to Shimoda by shared horse carriage. He composed a poem on his journey and the it is carved in the monument.
