■ 川端康成(Yasunari Kawabata)　　

（1899-1972)
大阪市出身の小説家。東大卒。
横山利一らと新感覚派運動を展開し、やがて独自の美的世界を築き上げました。
二十歳の頃、一人で伊豆を旅した川端康成は、ありのままの自然の美に魅せられ、
その後何度も湯ヶ島に滞在しては執筆にふけったそうです。
その時に出会ったのが「伊豆の踊子」のモデルとされる薫という名の女性。
本文中には「最初は私が湯が島へ来る途中、修善寺へ行く彼女たちと湯川橋の近くで出会った。
その時は若い女が三人だったが、踊子は太鼓を提げていた。
私は振り返り振り返り眺めて、旅情が自分の身についたと思った。」とございます。
踊子と語らい、若き日の淡い恋をし、作家としての駆け出しの頃、文人仲間と語った 湯ヶ島の地を心から愛していた川端康成。
輝かしい文化勲章・ノーベル文学賞受賞作家の最後は昭和47年4月16日、逗子マリーナの マンションの一室でガス自殺により自らの命を絶ちました。
享年72歳。自宅マンションからは 富士山がきれいに見えたそうです。
彼がこの地に残した足跡を辿って「伊豆の踊子」の世界を体験してみてはいかがでしょうか。

ここには天城、伊豆ゆかりの文学者約１２０名の資料が展示され川端康成の直筆原稿などを 実際にご覧頂けます

□伊豆の踊子文学碑
踊子橋をすぎた左に伊豆の踊子文学碑があります。
碑には川端康成のレリーフと「道がつづら折りになっていよいよ天城峠が近づいたと思うころ
雨足が杉の密林を白く染めながらすさまじい早さで麓からわたしを追って来た。」という冒頭部分が刻まれております。

□旧天城トンネル
夏でもひんやりとした全長446mのトンネル内は明治38年のそのままの形相を残し
平成１３年６月には国の重要文化財に指定されました。
小説の中で雨宿りをした茶屋はこの近くにあったと言われています。
(「伊豆の踊子」の一節より) 「 暗いトンネルに入ると、冷たいしずくがぽたぽた落ちていた。南伊豆の出口が前方に小さく明るんでいた。」
(トンネル出口付近にて) 「トンネルの出口から白塗りのさくに片側を縫われた峠道がいなずまのように流れていた。
この模型のような展望のすそのほうに芸人たちの姿が見えた。」

□梶井基次郎文学碑
梶井基次郎が川端康成に宛てて書かれた詩が刻まれています。

伊豆の踊子の物語に登場します。

■ Yasunari Kawabata(川端康成)　　

(1899-1972)
He was born in Oosaka-pref and graduated Tokyo University.
He devoted modern sensuous movement with Toshikazu Yokoyama and developed own aesthetic world. When he was 20 years old, he traveled Izu alone and attracted to the writing work. Then he met Kaoru, the model of Izu no Odoriko. (From the novel) ' I met women going to Syuzenji near Yukawa bridge on my way to Yugashima. Then I saw the group of three women and Odoriko was taking a drum. I looked around them and felt the heart of traveler.' Yasunari Kawabata loved Yugashima where he met Odoriko, fell in fleeting love of his boyhood and had community with the other authors in his beginning as an author. In 16th of April in 1972, it was the last breath of an author received the award of culture and the Nobel in Literature. He committed suicide by gassing himself at his condominium in Zushi marina when he was 72 years old. Beautiful Mt. Fuji could be viewed from his room. Please experience the Odoriko's nostalgic world with the interesting spots in Izu no Odoriko in Amagi.

□ Modern literature museum
About 120 contemporary data related with authors who loved Amagi are displayed. You can see the original manuscript by Yasunari Kawabata. Admission fee: Adult 600 yen Child 300 yen Opening time: 8:30〜16:30 (March-October)

□ Izu no Odoriko monument
Over the Odoriko bridge, you can find the Izu no Odoriko monument on your left. There is a relief of Yasunari Kawabata and opening of Izu no Odoriko, 'When I got close to Amagi through the switchback, suddenly wisp of rain came at fast in speed and the cedar forest are covered with white from the hill.'

□ Old Amagi tunnel
The tunnel 446m cool tunnel even in summer still remains some remnants of the time in 1963 and it was designated as a national important cultural property in 2001. There is a tea house where Odoriko took sheltered from the rain in the novel. (A passage of 'Izu no Odoriko') 'When I walked into the tunnel, cold drops was dripping. I saw the small light of the exit to Southern-Izu side. ' (At the exit of the tunnel) 'From the exit of the tunnel, zigzag mountain pass run along white-plastered fence. I found the group at the foot of the view like model.'

□ The monument of Motozirou Kazii
A poem wrote from Motozirou Kazii to Yasunari Kawabata was inscribed on the monument.
