■ 井上靖(Yasushi Inoue) 
(1907-1991)
旭川に生まれた井上靖は軍医である父が任地を転々としている間、
家族から遠く離れて多感な幼少時代をここ湯ケ島で祖母と二人で過ごしました。
京都大学文学部哲学科卒業後、毎日新聞社に入社。戦後になってさらに多くの作品を手がけ、
1950年（昭和25年）には「闘牛」で芥川賞を受賞。
湯ヶ島での多感な子供時代の思い出を記した自伝的小説「しろばんば」は物語性豊かな数多くの作品で、
日本文学の読者層を広げました。ちなみにしろばんばとは、夕方に 白い綿毛をつけて飛ぶ虫のこと。
天城の美しい自然のなかに育った一人の少年が、
しだいに自分をとりまく周囲の環境に目を開き、たくましく成長していく姿が書かれています。
井上靖が過ごした、90年前と変わらない小説の舞台を歩き、ノスタルジックなムードを お楽しみ下さい。

□湯が島小学校 井上靖の詩碑
「地球上で一番清らかな広場、北に向って整列すると富士が見える・・・・」
井上靖が、自身の母校である「湯ヶ島小学校」の児童たちに贈った詩を刻んだ碑です。
湯ヶ島小学校のPTAが学区内の人々の協力を得て小学校北側正門へ建立しました。

しろばんばの碑には小説の冒頭部分が刻まれて、湯ヶ島小学校の裏手に静かに建っています。
□井上靖文学碑
昭和２４年、井上靖が毎日新聞記者時代に処女作「猟銃」を発表しました。
その舞台となった滑沢渓谷は四季折々に美しい風情を楽しませてくれます。
碑には「猟銃」の冒頭部分 「なぜかその中年男は村人の顰蹙（ひんしゅく）を買い、
彼に集まる不評判は 子供の私の耳にさえ入っていた。」と刻まれています。
昭和２４年新聞記者時代の作で、靖の出世作でもあります。

■ Yasushi Inoue(井上靖) 
(1907-1991)
Born in Asahikawa(The north of Japan) and lived in Yugashima with his grand mother in his impressionable boyhood while his father who was a army doctor lived out of a suitcase. After graduating the Kyoto University literature philosophy department, he was hired into Mainich newspaper company. And he wrote a lot of books after the war and his book 'Tougyuu' was received Akutagawa Award in 1950. A expressive novel, 'Shirobanba' is written about his impressionable boyhood in Yugashima and it expanded the range of general reading population of the Japanese literature. Incidentally, 'Shirobanba' is a flying bug with white cotton in evening. A boy grow up strongly in the beautiful nature of Amagi through the human relationship and the nature around him is written in the novel. Please walk through the unchanged way in the novel from 90 years ago and feel the nostalgic mood.

□ Yugashima Elementary school Monument of Yashishi Inoue's poem
'Here is the purest place on the earth. When we line up to the north, we can see beautiful Mt. Fuji.' It is a monument with a poem which sang for the school kids in his alma mater by Yasushi Inoue. The PTA and the people in the school district built it in the north of the schoolhouse.

The beginning of Shirobanba is carved on the monument and it stands in the back of Yugashima elementary school quietly.
□ Literary monument of Yasushi Inoue
In 1949, he released the first novel, 'Ryoujyuu' when he was a writer on Mainichi newspaper. The scene in the nobel, Namesawa-keikoku in Amagi has seasonal beauties and attracts us. The monument has an epitaph, the beginning of Ryoujyuu, 'Somehow people frowned on him and his bad rumor went the around even to the children like me.' It was his first breakthrough work, when he was a newspaper writer in 1949.
